Many clients considering gender-affirming hair removal ask whether laser hair removal or electrolysis may be more suitable. Both methods have different strengths, and suitability depends on your individual goals, hair type and treatment area.

Laser hair removal
- Targets pigment in the hair follicle during its active growth phase.
- Treats multiple hairs at once, so larger areas such as facial hair and beard shadow, chest or other body areas can be treated more quickly.
- A course of treatments is normally required because hair grows in cycles.
- The aim is realistic, long-term hair reduction: reducing visible growth, beard shadow and the need for frequent shaving.
- Laser is not generally effective on grey, white, very light blonde or red hair. Suitability is assessed during consultation and patch test.
Electrolysis
- Treats individual hair follicles one at a time with a fine probe and electrical current.
- Does not rely on pigment in the hair, so it may be considered for lighter hair colours.
- Suitable where only a small number of hairs remain or where laser has been assessed as not generally suitable.
- A course of treatments is normally required.
- Many describe electrolysis as permanent removal for the follicles that have been treated.
When laser may be considered
Where there is suitable darker, denser hair over a larger area and where a faster reduction is desired. Treatment options for all skin tones are available subject to individual assessment, using the dual-wavelength Candela GentleMax Pro Plus (Alexandrite and Nd:YAG wavelengths).
When electrolysis may be considered
Where hair is grey, white, very light blonde or red, where only a small number of remaining lighter hairs are present, or where laser has been assessed as not generally suitable for that area.
A combination approach
Some clients choose laser for suitable darker hair to achieve long-term reduction, followed by electrolysis for any remaining lighter hairs. What is most suitable will vary according to treatment area, hair colour, hair density, skin tone, hormones and individual response.
Your progress, comfort, treatment settings and results will be reviewed throughout your course. We will explain what may realistically be achieved for you before you make any commitment.
Every consultation and treatment is carried out personally by Vanessa Hill in a private, one-to-one Worcester clinic with a private entrance and no shared waiting room.
